The philosophical method of phenomenology give us a lot of information about consciousness. No doubt that consciousness exists. I experience the difference between being conscious and not. What phenomenologists point out is that the inner experience of human existence is highest in our interaction with others in the world, ie our relational exterior experience—eg being “woke” if you will forgive my politics. Thus the name “con” or with and “science” i.e. knowing. They then go on to identify the characteristics or dimensions of consciousness which grounds our knowing with others in our environment. One of the characteristics is that human consciousness is corporeal, organic, — as opposed to splicing the soul from the body, or spirit from matter, as Descartes did. So will our machines have consciousness? If they do, I don’t think it will be human consciousness. But then you are in the field of AI—so you tell me.
