Why we fly the rainbow flag at Asbury Methodist Village:
A CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community) in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Like all flags the Rainbow Flag is a symbol. It stands for and even embodies a reality, a nation, a community, an ideal. Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr has cautioned us however, in the teaching of all religious traditions, to never make that symbol or what it stands for into idols, that is, uncriticizable absolutes.
The rainbow flag has been used by peoples in America and throughout the world as a symbol of welcome to persons of all religions, ethnicities, skin color, countries of origin, opinions, persuasions, and lifestyles. And so, the flag is uplifted by our AMV community during the June Month of Pride. Pride in our many traditions, Irish pride, Polish pride, Native American pride, Black pride, and most recently LGBTQ pride.
The rainbow flag is an American flag that stands for America’s great principle of e pluribus unum, the equality and dignity of every human person and their rights to enjoy all the necessities of life and to seek personal and public happiness as they consider suitable without interference to those same rights of others. The rainbow flag flies below the American flag to say we look up to our country to fulfil our higher ideals and aspirations in our rainbow covered nation and world.
We fly the flag to tell the world that we renew our commitment to celebrating a rainbow community here at Asbury, in Greater Gaithersburg, and throughout our nation.
