“Woke” I took to be a synonym of “enlightened.” Or in tune with modern science and philosophy. That is recognizing context for interpretation (eg hermeneutics). Critical thinking which was once the mark of a liberal education. So I welcomed being woke, understanding things, persons, events by the context in which they appeared. I read that one school district in Texas forbad critical thinking and knew that we were in trouble. We should think the way we are told to think by authorities rather than by questioning assumptions and looking for evidence.

So here we are today with politicians with an ideology that opposes questioning authority. I now know how to define anti-wokeness. It is the refusal to think. What Hannah Arendt calls the banality of evil.
